A key official in the Biden administration expressed "grave concern" on December 3 regarding the internal situation in South Korea following President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of emergency martial law. The official also emphasized the hope for a peaceful resolution in accordance with the law.

Kurt Campbell, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, made these remarks during an event in Washington, D.C., related to the upcoming Expo in Osaka, Japan, next year. Before delivering his speech, he said, "We are watching the recent developments in Korea with grave concern."

He added, "We are attempting to engage with Korean officials at all levels, both here and in Seoul. President Biden, the National Security Advisor, and the Secretary of State have all been briefed on the situation and are receiving ongoing assessments."

Campbell stressed, "I want to emphasize that the alliance with Korea is ironclad, and we stand by Korea during this time of uncertainty. Furthermore, we fully hope and expect that any political disputes will be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law."
