The federal government announced on the 27th that it will provide a total of $521 million in grants to 29 states, including Wisconsin, as well as Washington, D.C., to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative fuel infrastructure.

The U.S. Department of Transportation stated that over 9,200 additional EV charging ports will be installed as a result of this funding.

Of the total grants, $321 million will be allocated to building EV charging infrastructure in 41 communities across the country, while the remaining $200 million will fund 10 high-speed charging projects along the Alternative Fuel Corridor.

Currently, there are 192,000 EV charging ports in the United States, with approximately 1,000 new ones being added each week.

Meanwhile, despite the anticipation last year when automakers like Ford and General Motors (GM) agreed to use Tesla’s charging network, implementation has been delayed for over a year, according to a New York Times report on the 27th.

The report stated that for other automakers' EVs to use Tesla’s charging network, their vehicles would need software updates for compatibility, and adapters would be required to connect to Tesla’s charging connectors. However, both of these necessities are currently lacking, the NYT noted.
