On January 21, 2017, the Women’s March gathered women and men from all over the world to peacefully march for equal rights. The march took place in the United States, but also in countries such as England, France, Australia, and even Antarctica. Roughly 3 to 4 million people gathered in cities across the U.S. becoming one of the largest protests in American history. This movement was a striking reminder that women still do not have the same rights as men.
The movement began the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration. Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump has constantly degraded women and spoke of many ways he will diminish women’s rights. When he won the election, the realization that this man will be the next president of the United States finally hit. When a shocking event like this occurs, chaos begins. Women all over the United States began to worry about whether or not their daughter had a right to her own body or was able to have equal pay. A revolution sparked.
The Women’s March impacted the mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters to fight for their rights. Women and men carried signs that spoke of any number of issues: abortion, immigration, gender equality, and even Donald Trump himself. These signs were the key to this movement. Not only did they speak out against the unjust words of the new president, but became the weapons of this protest.
The energy that this protest fueled traveled all across the globe. Women led this great movement and many people followed. The Women’s March brought all genders, sexualities, and races to unite together and fight against the inequalities that persists today.
