Being a part of the Covenant House family progressively changes and improves me as a better person. This organization allows me to participate in events so I can be able to help the people about my age that are roaming in the streets, alone and at risk.
As I am active in this organization, I was beginning to be exposed of the reality of youth homelessness. Before joining the Covenant House, I never imagined or even thought of kids being homeless. I used to think that homelessness was only common to adults, but this was not true. After researching about it, I was shocked to learn how over 2 million kids in America are homeless. These children risk their lives just to avoid abuse, drugs, violence and unhealthy relationships among their families. I now come to a realization that the reason why I am unaware of youth homelessness is because I actually live in a safe home with a happy family.
Through Covenant House, I fundraise and donate to give back to those who are currently being cared at their shelter. Once in a while, Covenant House will either have bake sales, car washes and donations to help aid financially. For the holidays, we serve food and donate gifts to give for the children. In the end of the day, it feels really good to know that the children enjoyed all the things we prepared for them and to see smiles on people’s faces.
At first, I was not enthusiastic about joining this organization, but now I am glad to work with students my age group with passionate hearts. It is amazing to see how doing small things can truly make a difference.
