1월 27일 캘리포니아주에서 여덟쌍둥이가 태어났다. 미국에서는 1998년 텍사스에서 태어난 8쌍둥이 이후 처음이기 때문에 화제꺼리가 되었다. 8쌍둥이는 영어로 octuplets(옥타플렛츠)라 한다. 일곱쌍둥이는 septuplets(셉타플렛츠), 여섯쌍둥이는 sextuplets(섹스타플렛츠), 다섯쌍둥이는 quintuplets(퀸타플렛츠), 네쌍둥이는 quadruplets(콰드루플렛츠), 세쌍둥이는 triplets(트리플렛츠) 그리고 두쌍둥이는 twins(트윈즈)라 한다. twins를 제외하고 위의 단어들에서 맨 끝에 붙어있는 ts만 떼어내면 octuple(8배가 되다), septuple(7배가 되다), sextuple(6배가 되다), quintuple(5배가 되다), quadruple(4배가 되다), triple(3배가 되다)와 같은 동사가 된다. 예컨대, This town’s population quadrupled in just 60 years.라 하면 “이 도시의 인구는 불과 60년만에 4배가 되었다”는 말이 된다. quadrupled 대신 increased four times라 해도 된다. times는 여기서 “배”이란 뜻이다. three times는 3배, one hundred times는 100배다. 두배가 되는 것은 double이라 한다.

A: You all look alike. Are you triplets?
B: No. We are twins but he is our cousin.
A: 너희들 모두 닮았구나. 너희들 세쌍둥이니?
B: 아니요. 우리는 쌍둥이지만, 이 애는 우리 사촌이에요.

A: The world’s population increases geometrically, not arithmetically.
B: What do you mean by that?
A: It means the population of the world increases very fast. In 1650, it stood at about 500 million. It took 200 years to double itself. But it took just 80 years to double itself again. In another 80 years, the world’s population nearly tripled! As of 2008, the world had a population of 6.7 billion!

A: 세계인구가 굉장히 빨리 증가하고 있다는 뜻이야. 1650년 세계인구는 약 5억이었어. 그것이 2배로 늘어나는데 200년이 걸렸지. 다시 2배가 되는데는 단 80년밖에 걸리지 않았어. 다시 80년이 지난 뒤에는 세계인구가 3배로 늘어났어! 2008년 현재 세계인구는 67억이야! <조화유>
